Comparison

Standard Shopping vs Performance Max

Both campaign types sell from the same Merchant Center feed, and most stores end up running both. The difference is control against reach: Standard Shopping lets you decide which queries and products get budget, while Performance Max spends across Shopping, Search, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail and Maps using the feed and your assets as it sees fit. Choosing between them is a question about your catalog, your margin spread and how much you need to see.

Option A

Standard Shopping

Product listing ads on Google Search and the Shopping tab, built from the feed, with search term reports, negative keywords, campaign priorities and product-group bids you set yourself.

Best for

  • Catalogs where a few products or margin tiers deserve very different bids
  • Stores that need search term visibility to keep brand and non-brand honest
  • Accounts still building conversion history, where manual or target ROAS control beats an algorithm with little data
  • Query sculpting across campaigns using priority settings

Option B

Performance Max

One campaign that serves Shopping listings plus text, image and video assets across every Google surface, optimised toward a conversion goal, with audience signals as hints rather than targets.

Best for

  • Stores with reliable conversion tracking and enough purchase volume to feed the model
  • Reaching shoppers beyond the search results page, on YouTube and Discover, from the same feed
  • Long-tail catalogs where hand-managing bids per product group is not practical
  • Feed-only asset groups when creative would only dilute the product listings

Where control matters more than reach

Standard Shopping earns its place whenever the store needs to decide, product by product, how much an impression is worth. A catalog with a hero product at a strong margin and a long tail at a thin one wants different bids, and product groups built from custom labels deliver that. The search term report shows which queries actually triggered the listings, which is the only way to know whether a campaign is growing on non-brand demand or recycling people who already typed the brand name.

Campaign priorities add a second layer. A high-priority campaign with a low bid and a long negative list catches generic queries, a medium campaign takes category queries, and a low-priority campaign with high bids is reserved for the exact product and brand queries that convert best. That structure is impossible inside a single Performance Max campaign.

Where reach and automation pay

Performance Max is the only way to put the product feed in front of a shopper on YouTube or Discover without building separate campaigns for each surface. When conversion tracking is accurate, purchase values are passed correctly and the store sees enough orders each week for the model to learn from, it finds incremental buyers that Standard Shopping cannot reach.

Feed-only asset groups are the middle path for many stores: Performance Max without text and image assets behaves much like a smart Shopping campaign with wider placement, and it removes the risk of weak creative dragging results. The trade is transparency. Brand exclusions must be set deliberately, placement reports need checking, and the store should keep Standard Shopping running alongside so the query mix stays visible.

Running both without one cannibalising the other

When both campaign types cover the same products, Performance Max takes priority in the auction. The usual arrangement is to give Performance Max the products and surfaces where reach matters and keep Standard Shopping for the products, queries and margin tiers that need protection, using listing group exclusions so the two do not overlap on the same items.

Brand goes into its own Standard Shopping or Search campaign and is excluded from Performance Max, so growth reports mean growth. Then both are judged on the same scoreboard: contribution margin after ad spend, new customer share and blended efficiency against the store's order data, not the platform's attributed revenue.

The honest bottom line

Start with Standard Shopping when the account is young, the margin spread is wide or the store must see its search terms, and add Performance Max once tracking is trustworthy and purchase volume is steady. Mature stores usually run both: Performance Max for reach across surfaces and the long tail, Standard Shopping for the products and queries that deserve deliberate bids and brand protection. A store that only ever runs one is leaving either control or reach on the table.

Questions

Asked when choosing

By CartKernel · Last reviewed

Can Standard Shopping and Performance Max run at the same time?

Yes, and most established stores do. Performance Max wins the auction when both cover the same product, so split them by product group or listing group exclusions, keep brand out of Performance Max, and read them together on margin rather than on each campaign's own ROAS.

Does Performance Max need images and video?

Not for product listings. A feed-only asset group serves Shopping placements from the feed alone. Text, image and video assets extend reach to YouTube, Display and Discover, and they are worth adding only when the creative is good enough to represent the brand.

Which one is better for a small store with few conversions?

Usually Standard Shopping, because it works with modest conversion volume and shows the search terms, which teaches a small store what its buyers actually type. Performance Max becomes the better fit once purchases are steady enough for its bidding to learn.

How do I stop Performance Max from spending on my brand name?

Add the brand to the campaign's brand exclusion list, run brand in its own campaign, and check the placement and search category reports for brand-shaped queries each month. Report brand and non-brand as separate lines so the growth number is honest.
