Shopify Plus CRO agency

On Shopify Plus the checkout stops being out of reach. Checkout UI extensions, the branding controls and Shopify Functions let you change what a shopper sees and what the cart does at the final step, which is the part of the funnel standard plans cannot touch. That puts real experimentation on the pages closest to the money.

What Shopify Plus changes

Platform facts that shape the work

These are true of Shopify Plus today and they decide the approach before any strategy does.

  • Checkout has supported extension points

Plus stores can place content at defined positions in checkout: reassurance beside payment, delivery instructions, gift options, or an offer after payment. These are supported surfaces rather than injected scripts, so they survive platform updates instead of breaking quietly.

  • Checkout appearance is configurable

Color, type, spacing and corner treatment in checkout can be brought into line with the rest of the store through branding controls. The last step stops looking like a different website, which matters most to first time buyers deciding whether to trust the page.

  • Functions move cart logic onto the platform

Custom discount, delivery and payment logic runs on Shopify's own servers through Functions. Volume pricing, bundle rules, hiding a payment method for certain carts and conditional free shipping become platform behavior rather than a stack of apps.

  • The page after payment is a real surface

A post-purchase offer or a short question can run after the order is captured without putting the transaction at risk. On a Plus store that is usually the safest place to test average order value.

  • Changes can be scheduled

Theme versions, prices and publish states can be switched at a set time and switched back. That matters when an experiment or a promotion has to run against a fixed window rather than depending on someone being awake at midnight.

  • Volume makes proper testing viable

Most Plus stores have enough orders for split testing on the main templates to reach a readable result inside a sensible window, so the program can be run on evidence rather than on opinion and precedent.

The work

Item by item, inside Shopify Plus

Funnel diagnosis by segment

The path from landing to order read separately for new and returning shoppers, by device, by market and by traffic source, because a Plus store's aggregate conversion rate usually hides two or three very different journeys.

Checkout experiments

Extension content, field configuration, payment method order, delivery presentation and branding tested with a real control group, measured on completed orders rather than on progression between steps.

Cart logic through Functions

Threshold offers, bundle pricing, quantity breaks and shipping rules implemented as Functions so the rule is consistent everywhere and does not depend on a script running in the browser before the shopper acts.

Post-purchase and thank you page

One click offers, accessory attachment, subscription conversion or account creation placed after payment, with the confirmation content kept clear so support volume does not rise as order value does.

Template experimentation

Product, collection and cart templates tested through theme level splits rather than browser repaints, keeping the pages fast and the results free of the flicker that contaminates client side tools.

B2B ordering experience

Where the store serves trade buyers, the reorder path, quantity entry, saved lists and payment terms are treated as their own funnel with their own measures, since a wholesale buyer's needs are not a consumer's.

Measurement and decision rules

Sample sizes agreed before launch, one primary metric per experiment, guardrail metrics for returns and support contacts, and results recorded so a future team can see what was already tried.

What goes wrong

On Shopify Plus, specifically

  • Rebuilding checkout content as bespoke scripts when the supported extension points already cover the requirement
  • Adding a post-purchase offer that delays the confirmation and pushes up where is my order contacts
  • Writing Functions logic that duplicates a discount rule the admin already supports
  • Running overlapping experiments on the same traffic so no result can be attributed to a change
  • Judging a checkout test on step progression instead of completed orders and returns

Questions

Shopify Plus CRO agency questions

By CartKernel · Last reviewed

What can actually be changed in the Shopify Plus checkout?

Content at supported extension points, the visual branding, which fields are required, how delivery and payment options are presented, and cart logic through Functions. What you do not get is a free hand to rebuild the checkout as arbitrary markup, and that constraint is what keeps it fast and stable.

Are post purchase offers worth running?

They can add order value without touching the checkout conversion rate, which is why they are usually tested early. The guardrails matter: keep the offer relevant to what was bought, keep the confirmation information visible, and watch return rates and support volume alongside the extra revenue.

How do you split test on Shopify Plus without page flicker?

Split at the template or server layer rather than repainting a rendered page. Two theme variations with traffic divided, or an extension that renders the right version from the start, avoid the visible flash that both annoys shoppers and biases the measurement.

Should Plus stores test the checkout before the product page?

Usually not first. Checkout is where the highest intent shoppers are, so the absolute numbers are smaller than they look, and product and cart pages hold more people to win. We size the opportunity at each step, then work down the list by revenue at stake.

Does a B2B channel need separate conversion work?

Yes. Trade buyers repeat, order in quantity, often work from a list and may pay on terms. The measures that matter are reorder frequency, list completion and time to place an order, not the consumer conversion rate. Treating both with one funnel report obscures both.
