Shopify Google Ads agency

Google Ads on a Shopify store starts in the product data. The Google and YouTube channel reads your catalog, variants and inventory and keeps Merchant Center current, so what a Shopping or Performance Max campaign can bid on is decided by fields inside Shopify. Campaign structure still matters, but feed quality and the template behind the click usually decide the economics.

What Shopify changes

Platform facts that shape the work

These are true of Shopify today and they decide the approach before any strategy does.

  • The sales channel owns the feed

Shopify's Google and YouTube channel maps a set of catalog fields into Merchant Center and keeps price and availability current. Anything the mapping does not cover, such as a rewritten title or extra custom labels, is added through a supplemental feed or a dedicated feed tool.

  • Every variant becomes its own item

Variants arrive in Merchant Center as separate items with their own ids, prices and stock status. Color and size then compete with each other in the auction, which is why variant images, variant naming and inventory hygiene change what shoppers actually see.

  • Price and stock move on Shopify's schedule

The channel pushes catalog changes without asking. A bulk edit, a price rule or a variant set to keep selling when inventory runs out reaches the auction quickly, so routine catalog housekeeping is part of keeping the ad account healthy.

  • Tags live in customer events

Marketing tags run in Shopify's customer events sandbox rather than in the theme. The channel can place the Google tag for you, and a custom pixel covers anything beyond that, including the purchase event that fires from checkout.

  • Offers come from the discounts area

Automatic discounts and codes are configured in the Shopify admin. A Merchant Center promotion only holds up when the shopper meets the same offer on the page, and a sale annotation depends on how the compare at price has been set on the variant.

  • Landing pages are collections and products

Shopify has no separate landing page system, so search campaigns point at collections, product pages or theme pages. Building a campaign around a category often means building the collection and its copy first.

The work

Item by item, inside Shopify

Catalog and feed audit

Every field the channel sends checked against Merchant Center requirements: titles, product types, Google product categories, GTIN and brand coverage, image quality, and the variants currently disapproved, excluded or sitting outside the market you sell into.

Attribute enrichment

Search language rebuilt into titles through metafields or a supplemental feed, with custom labels for margin, price band, stock depth and season so bidding can treat a clearance line differently from a hero product.

Merchant Center health

Account and item level issues worked through, shipping and tax settings matched to the rates the store really charges, and the policy items that hold approvals steady kept in order across the whole catalog.

Campaign build

Shopping and Performance Max split along the custom labels that matter, brand queries handled in their own campaign, and non-brand search built only where the catalog can genuinely answer the query behind it.

Conversion tracking

One purchase event configured through the channel tag or a custom pixel, tax and shipping treated consistently, enhanced conversions set up where consent allows, and the count checked against Shopify orders before any spend decision.

Reporting against orders

Spend reported next to Shopify order revenue and product margin, with new and returning customers separated so the account is not credited with repeat buyers it did not win.

What goes wrong

On Shopify, specifically

  • Judging Performance Max on the platform's own conversion count without reconciling it against orders in the Shopify admin
  • Running one campaign across the whole catalog when custom labels could separate margin, stock depth and season
  • Leaving sold out variants in the feed because the product is set to keep selling when inventory runs out
  • Pointing search traffic at a collection that has no copy, or at the catch all collection the theme generates
  • Installing several tracking apps that each fire their own purchase event, then reconciling the difference every month

Questions

Shopify Google Ads agency questions

By CartKernel · Last reviewed

Is the Google and YouTube channel enough, or does a Shopify store need a feed tool?

The channel is enough to get accurate products into Merchant Center and keep price and stock current. A feed tool earns its place when you need rewritten titles, rules by collection, extra custom labels or several destinations, because that work sits outside what the channel maps.

Why are some Shopify variants missing from Merchant Center?

Usual reasons include a missing GTIN with no exemption set, a variant excluded from the sales channel, zero inventory, an image shared with another item, or a price that does not match the market the shopper is browsing in. The item level diagnostics name the reason for each one.

How should Google Ads conversion tracking be set up on Shopify?

Pick one source and stay with it. Either let the sales channel place the Google tag or configure a custom pixel in customer events, then confirm exactly one purchase event per order with a value that matches what Shopify recorded. Two tags running together inflate the count and bidding follows the inflated number.

Can Google Ads work for a Shopify store with a small catalog?

Yes, with a different shape. A short catalog moves effort toward brand protection, a tight set of non-brand search terms and Shopping on the products that are reliably in stock. Performance Max can still run, though it needs stronger assets and a clear exclusion list when there are fewer items to learn from.

Does the Shopify theme affect Google Ads results?

It affects everything after the click, which is most of the account economics. Slow product templates, app scripts that block rendering and collections with no copy all reduce what the same traffic is worth. Landing page work usually belongs in the same sprint as campaign work.
