Shopify SEO agency
Shopify decides a lot of your SEO before you touch it: the URL structure is fixed, every product can be reached through several collection paths, and the theme controls speed and markup. An SEO program on Shopify has to work with those facts rather than around them, and most of the work lands in the theme, in metafields and in how collections are built.
What Shopify changes
Platform facts that shape the work
These are true of Shopify today and they decide the approach before any strategy does.
Fixed URL structure
Products live under /products/, collections under /collections/, pages under /pages/ and articles under /blogs/. You cannot remove those prefixes, so the strategy uses handles and collection design rather than fighting the paths.
Products reachable through collection paths
A product linked from a collection gets a /collections/name/products/handle URL as well as its /products/handle URL. Shopify canonicalises to the product URL, but themes that link the nested path waste crawl budget and confuse reports until the links are fixed.
Collections are the category pages
Automated collections built from tags and metafields are the way to create indexable sub-categories and attribute pages. The theme decides whether a collection can carry copy above and below the grid.
Filters through Search and Discovery
Filter selections create parameterised URLs that canonicalise to the collection. Useful attribute pages need to be built as collections rather than relying on filter URLs to rank.
Theme controls speed and markup
Liquid sections, app embeds and third-party scripts decide Core Web Vitals and structured data. Speed work is theme work, and JSON-LD comes from the theme or a small custom snippet rather than a heavy app.
The work
Item by item, inside Shopify
Crawl and indexation audit
A full crawl of the store, Search Console coverage, nested product paths, tag pages, pagination and sort parameters reviewed so the index holds one URL per product and per useful collection.
Collection architecture
Demand mapped to collections, automated collections built for the attributes and product types that have search demand, and navigation and internal links arranged so authority flows down to them.
Theme-level fixes
Canonical and robots handling in Liquid, breadcrumb and Product schema written into the theme, image handling with responsive sizes and lazy loading, and app embeds removed or deferred where they slow the page.
Metafields for content at scale
Collection copy, product specifications, FAQs and buying guidance stored as metafields and rendered by theme sections, so thousands of pages get real content without hand-editing each one.
Product page optimization
Titles from real search language, descriptions that beat manufacturer text, variant handling that keeps one indexable URL per product, and review markup that validates.
Reporting by template
Search Console and analytics joined so collection pages, product pages and blog content report clicks, revenue and conversion rate as separate lines every month.
What goes wrong
On Shopify, specifically
- Linking products through nested /collections/x/products/y paths in the theme, which multiplies crawlable URLs for every product
- Letting tag pages such as /collections/all/tag-name index when they carry no copy and duplicate real collections
- Installing an SEO app that rewrites JSON-LD on top of the theme's own markup, producing two conflicting Product blocks
- Treating blog posts as the SEO program while collection pages stay empty
- Adding app embeds for every feature and then wondering why product pages fail Core Web Vitals
Is Shopify's fixed URL structure a problem for SEO?
No. The /products/ and /collections/ prefixes do not hold rankings back. What matters is that each product and collection has one clean canonical URL, descriptive handles, real content and good internal links. Stores rank on Shopify with the structure exactly as it comes.
Do you need a Shopify SEO app?
Rarely. Most SEO on Shopify is theme, metafield and collection work that we do directly. An app that adds redirects or image alt text in bulk can help, but apps that inject schema or rewrite titles often conflict with the theme and slow the page.
Can collections have proper content on Shopify?
Yes, with a theme section that renders copy above and below the product grid, usually from metafields so the content can be managed per collection. Many themes ship with only a description field above the grid; adding the below-grid section is a small theme change.
How do you handle product variants for SEO on Shopify?
Variants share one product URL with a variant parameter, which canonicalises to the product. We keep one indexable page per product, make sure the theme does not link variant parameters as if they were separate pages, and use Product schema with offers for each variant where that is accurate.
Does Shopify Plus change the SEO work?
The SEO fundamentals are the same. Plus adds checkout extensibility, Launchpad and more API capacity, which matter for large catalogs and for speed at scale, and international setups with Shopify Markets need hreflang and market-specific handling that we plan as part of the program.
