Loyalty
Smile.io for ecommerce stores
Smile.io runs points, referrals and VIP tiers for Shopify and BigCommerce stores and shows the program through a launcher, a panel and an optional loyalty page. Most programs we review reward purchases at a default points rate, offer a single redemption and never mention the balance again. We set the economics from margin, add the earning actions that build the list, and make the balance visible where the next order is decided.

What we do with it
The work inside Smile.io
Program economics from margin and cycle
Points per dollar, reward thresholds and reward types are calculated from gross margin, average order value and how often the product is bought. The aim is a reward the average customer can reach on the second order and the store can afford on every one.
Earning actions beyond purchases
Smile.io awards points for account creation, birthdays, social follows, referrals and, through integrations, for reviews. We enable the actions that build first-party data and consent, and cut the ones that only hand out points without teaching the store anything.
Referral program with tracked outcomes
Referrals give the friend a reward and the referrer points or a coupon. We set the offer pair, put the referral prompt after delivery or a positive review, and report referred orders by new customers rather than by referral links clicked.
VIP tiers that mean something
Tiers based on spend or points earned in a period give the best customers a reason to stay. We set thresholds from the customer value distribution so the top tier is reachable by real buyers and carries a benefit the store can deliver, such as early access or free shipping.
Visibility in the store and in email
The launcher, panel, product page points estimate and cart reminders show shoppers what they will earn. Through the Klaviyo integration we put balances and tier status into post-purchase, win-back and campaign emails, so the points are remembered when the next order is due.
Redemption inside checkout
Rewards are issued as discount codes or applied through the platform's discount system. We test how a Smile reward combines with other discounts, free shipping rules and subscription pricing, and set combination rules so a reward is never blocked at checkout.
When it fits
Smile.io is the right tool when
Stores with a repeat purchase to reward
Consumables, beauty, pet, coffee and apparel brands with a buying cycle give points somewhere to go. A product bought once a decade needs referrals more than points.
Shopify and BigCommerce merchants
Those are Smile.io's native integrations, including Shopify POS, so points earned in a retail location and online sit in one balance.
Brands that already email their customers well
A loyalty program is a reason to send, and the balance in the email is what drives redemption. Stores with a working Klaviyo or Omnisend account see the program pay sooner.
Teams without a developer on hand
Smile.io is configured in its admin without theme work for most stores. The custom loyalty page and headless options exist when a developer is available, but the core program does not need one.
What to watch
Where accounts drift
Facts about defaults and costs, not criticism. These are the settings we check on every account.
Order limits define the plan
Plans are set by monthly order volume, and higher plans carry more features. A seasonal store can hit the limit in November and should plan for that tier in advance.
Points are a promise on the balance sheet
Outstanding points represent future discounts. Expiry after a period of inactivity, reminder emails before expiry and a monthly total of unredeemed points keep the liability under control.
Discount combinations follow platform rules
Whether a Smile reward stacks with a sale price, a free shipping offer or a subscription discount depends on the platform's discount combination settings. Untested combinations are where loyalty rewards fail quietly.
Customer accounts and login
Points follow the customer account. Shopify's account settings decide how shoppers log in, and guest checkouts do not earn unless the order is later matched to an account. The signup prompt matters as much as the points rate.
How many points per dollar should a store give in Smile.io?
Whatever makes the reward worth about the discount the store can afford on a repeat order. If the store can give a defined amount off a second purchase, express that as a reward threshold and set points per dollar so an average order reaches it in two purchases.
Can Smile.io points be used on subscription orders?
Rewards issue as discount codes, and whether a code applies to a subscription order depends on the subscription app and the platform's discount rules. We test the combination for the store's specific setup before promising it to customers.
How do you get Smile.io balances into Klaviyo emails?
The integration syncs points balance, tier and referral URL as profile properties and sends events when points are earned or a reward is redeemed. We use those properties in win-back, post-purchase and campaign templates and set up a flow when a customer crosses a reward threshold.
What loyalty metrics should a store watch each month?
Enrolment rate, share of orders from members, redemption rate, points issued against points redeemed, referred new customers and repeat purchase rate for members compared with non-members. Redemption is the one that shows whether the program is remembered.
