Stape for ecommerce stores

Stape hosts a server-side Google Tag Manager container and adds the pieces stores need around it: a custom domain, a loader for the web container, cookie handling for Safari, and tag templates for the ad and analytics platforms. Most Stape accounts we review were set up to satisfy one vendor's Conversions API and then left alone, with the web container still sending everything from the browser and the server receiving a fraction of it. We use Stape as the delivery layer for every event the store sends, and treat it as infrastructure that needs monitoring.

Hosting and domain setup

Stape runs the server container so the store does not manage Google Cloud. We choose the hosting region for the store's markets and data rules, set up the custom subdomain so cookies are first-party, verify DNS and the certificate, and point the web container's transport at the new endpoint.

Server-side destinations

GA4, Google Ads, Meta Conversions API, TikTok Events API, Microsoft UET, Klaviyo and others are configured as server tags from a single incoming event stream. We map each vendor's required parameters, hash personal data where the vendor expects it, and set the event identifiers that let each platform deduplicate browser and server events.

Shopify integration through webhooks

Stape's Shopify app can send purchase and other order events from Shopify's webhooks straight to the server container. That gives a purchase record that does not depend on the shopper's browser, which we use as the reliable purchase source for ad platforms while keeping browser events for behaviour.

Web container loading and cookies

Stape's custom loader serves the web container from the store's domain, and its cookie options extend first-party cookie lifetime where browsers would shorten it. We enable both where they fit the store's consent setup and confirm that consent choices still govern what is sent.

Consent through the server

Server-side tagging does not remove the need for consent. We pass consent state from the banner into every event and configure server tags to respect it, so a declined visitor's data is not forwarded to a vendor just because it reached the server.

Monitoring and cost control

Stape bills by monthly requests, and every page view, event and vendor call counts. We set up monitoring for request volume, failed tags and vendor errors, review the preview log after each change, and keep the container version history so a broken tag can be reverted quickly.

When it fits

Stape is the right tool when

  • Stores that want server-side without a cloud project

    Stape removes Google Cloud setup, scaling and billing management. A store with no engineer to maintain infrastructure gets a working server container faster.

  • Merchants on Shopify sending events to Meta, Google and TikTok

    The Shopify app, tag templates and documentation cover the common ad platform integrations, which is the core of most ecommerce setups.

  • Brands where browser tracking losses are visible

    If ad platforms and GA4 see materially fewer purchases than the store, server-delivered events close part of the gap, and Stape is the quickest route to them.

  • Stores with data residency requirements

    Hosting regions can be chosen to keep event processing in a specific geography, which matters for some Canadian and European customers.

What to watch

Where accounts drift

Facts about defaults and costs, not criticism. These are the settings we check on every account.

  • Request volume grows with traffic and vendors

    Each event fanned out to five vendors is six requests. Peak season and new integrations move the account to a higher tier, so the plan should be sized on peak traffic.

  • The custom domain is part of the tracking

    If the subdomain's DNS or certificate lapses, every tag in the container stops. Domain renewals and DNS changes need the analytics owner in the loop.

  • Server templates need updating

    Vendor tags from the community gallery change as platform APIs change. A quarterly check of template versions and vendor documentation prevents silent failures.

  • Server-side is not a consent workaround

    Data reaching the store's own server is still personal data. The same consent and privacy rules apply, and regulators in Canada, the United States and Europe treat server-side collection the same way.

What is the difference between Stape and running server-side GTM on Google Cloud?

The container is the same Google product either way. Stape hosts it, manages scaling and adds a loader, cookie tools, a Shopify app and templates. Google Cloud hosting gives the store full control and its own billing but needs setup and maintenance the store's team has to own.

Does Stape improve ad platform reporting?

It can improve how many purchases the platforms receive, because events sent from the server or from Shopify webhooks do not depend on the shopper's browser. It does not change attribution rules, and platform-reported figures still need reconciling with store orders.

How long does a Stape setup take for a Shopify store?

For a store with a clean web container and data layer, the hosting, domain, Shopify app and main vendor tags are usually done within a couple of weeks including testing. Stores with an untidy web container need that fixed first, which adds time.

Do we still need the browser pixels once Stape is running?

Usually yes, for behavioural events and for the identifiers that let vendors match server events to sessions. The typical setup sends browser events through the server container and adds the webhook purchase as the reliable order record, with deduplication between them.

Can Stape work with a headless or non-Shopify store?

Yes. The server container accepts events from any web container or direct API calls. The Shopify-specific convenience is the app; WooCommerce, BigCommerce and headless builds send events through the web container or their own server integration.
